Council Members

The Royal Society of Biology Council act as the Trustees of the Society and consist of three Honorary Officers: President, Secretary and Treasurer. Four members are elected from the College of Individual Members and four are elected from the College of Organisational Members. Another four members can be appointed by Council to ensure coverage of the breadth of the life sciences based on skills gap amongst Council. Sir Ian is currently a professor at the University of St Andrews and Chair of the UK Research Integrity Office. He was Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government on Food and the Environment from 2012-2019. As a marine and polar scientist he served as the first Director of the Scottish Oceans Institute at St Andrews. He is a board member of UKRI and co-chairs the Environment Council for Scotland with Scotland’s First Minister. In addition to being a Fellow of the RSB he is a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Professor Wathes is professor of veterinary reproduction at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), London. She has published extensively on topics related to the physiology of farm livestock and has also worked closely with the dairy industry to promote a better understanding of factors affecting cattle health and longevity. She also has a keen interest in postgraduate education. She was awarded the Research Medal of the Royal Agricultural Society of England in 2006 and the Marshall Medal of the Society for Reproduction and Fertility in 2015.

Dr Leong is a life science professional specialising in R&D policy, strategy, funding, and public affairs. Her cross-sector career spans academia, private foundation, and industry. Before joining AstraZeneca in October 2014 as Director Science Relations Europe based in Global Corporate Affairs, Louise was director of R&D Policy and on the senior leadership team at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. Louise has collaborated with the RSB and its predecessor the Bioscience Federation for some years, forming a life science alliance on EU public affairs and serving on the Employer Advisory Group.

Professor Brown did postdoctoral research in Fred Sanger's group at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and held positions at the University of Bristol and the University of Melbourne, before becoming professor of microbiology at the University of Birmingham. The majority of his work has been on understanding the response of bacteria to toxic metals. Among many roles he has worked as director of science and technology at BBSRC, and as senior vice-principal at the University of Edinburgh. He is a past President of the Microbiology Society and was awarded an OBE for Services to Science in 2014.

Professor Sara Louise Cosby is head of virology at the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute in Belfast and an honorary/emeritus Professor in the Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, in the School of Medicine Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences (MDBMS), Queen's University Belfast. She previously held the Chair of Microbiology in the School of MDBMS. Louise's research has focused on elucidation of pathogenic mechanisms of measles virus, the closely related veterinary morbilliviruses and more recently human and bovine respiratory syncytial and corona viruses. Among many roles, Louise is currently on the Science Advisory Board of the Animal and Plant Health Agency, UK and represents the RSB Northern Ireland branch on the All Party Group on STEM Committee at Stormont.

Lucy is the technical manager for the Department of Biology at the University of York, where she has worked for nearly 30 years. She manages the technical support, services, and facilities for more than 1,100 undergraduates, 150 researchers, 70 academics and 300 staff, of which 90 are technicians. Throughout her career, Lucy has been an advocate for improving career development opportunities for technicians in higher education. She is also an external advisor for the National Technician Development Centre (NTDC), working with other higher education institutes, advising on technical job roles, structures, and career pathways. Lucy's aim as a trustee is to reach out and strengthen connections between the RSB and the national technical community.

Suzy is a nurse at Southampton General Hospital. She graduated with BSc Hons Microbiology from Cardiff University, followed by a Post-Graduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing at Bournemouth University. She completed her MSc Infectious Disease from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine while working as an ICU nurse, before working overseas for two years in a variety of healthcare settings in Africa and Asia. On returning to the UK, she completed her PhD and two post-doctoral positions in microbial ecology at Swansea University. She spent a couple of years teaching and researching bioremediation of textiles at Kingston University and working part-time on the ICU at Southampton Hospital. She returned to nursing full-time and is part of the Environment Monitoring Team. Her key interests are infection prevention and sustainability.

Stefan is a professor of cell technology and has been a principal investigator at Durham University since 2000. His training and background is in animal cell biology with specific interests in anatomy, tissue biology, cell differentiation and stem cells. Stefan is also an entrepreneur, having successfully developed and fully commercialised market-leading technology to improve cultured cells. He continues to work closely with the private sector through collaborations with industry and consultancy. Stefan brings plenty of trusteeship experience and leadership to Council, having contributed significant volunteer time as President of the Anatomical Society, Treasurer of the British Neuroscience Association, as well as being Chair on multiple BBSRC and UKRI funding panels, evaluating scientific quality through the REF panel, and acting as a Board member of the NC3Rs.

Hilary obtained a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Edinburgh and following post-docs at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and the University of Cambridge, she went to work for The Open University, where, apart from a brief spell at the Wellcome Trust, she has remained for more than 30 years. Her research explores the development of three-dimensional co-culture systems involving adipocytes, and the pedagogy of distance learning. She has wide experience of distance teaching and learning, and of the issues around widening participation in science education. Hilary has worked closely with the RSB as a member of Heads of University Biosciences (HUBS) Executive, which she chaired for several years. Prior to her Council-appointed role she served as an RSB Trustee for four years, having been elected by the College of Individual Members.

Melanie served as Executive Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), between April 2018 - June 2023, having been interim Chief Executive for two years prior to this. At BBSRC she was responsible for £420M annual public investment in bioscience research, training and infrastructures at UK Universities and Institutes. Melanie is a graduate of Imperial College (Biochemistry). She completed her PhD at University College London and spent six years as a post-doctoral researcher at The University of British Columbia, Canada. On returning to the U.K. she established an independent research group at the University of Bath, focussed on molecular signalling and stem cell science, becoming the first female professor in her department. At UKRI, alongside leadership of BBSRC, Melanie held pan-disciplinary responsibilities including delivery of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and more latterly was the UKRI Executive Champion for People, Culture and Talent, overseeing development and publication of the organisation’s first Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy. She also served as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the international Human Frontiers Science Program Organisation and the Governing Board for Science Europe. Melanie was awarded a DBE for her services to bioscience in the 2023 King’s birthday Honours list.
