  • Wide range of data collected using state of the art equipment; and
  • Tow a net to collect samples of plankton which can then be viewed using the onboard microscope.

The lecture will be held between 12:45 and 13:45 in one of the main lecture theatres and be presented by one of the Professors at the NOC, the topic will be "Exploring life at volcanic vents in the deep sea."

Wilderness and Foraging Event

In September members gathered just north of Salisbury for a day of wild food foraging run by Wilderness Survival Skills (http://www.wilderness-survival.co.uk).

The event took in a 5 hour walk of the Great Ridge in Wiltshire stopping along the way to identify various sources of food, medicines and flora suitable for survival situations.

The group discovered a plethora of uses for trees, roots, leaves and berries. Personal tastes varied within the group but hairy bitter-cress, water pepper and wood sorrel all seemed to be firm favourites. After spotting several examples of mushrooms, “fungal fear” set in as the minefield that is amateur fungal identification became apparent.

The medicinal products of plants were also explored ranging from wound healing, intestinal problems, insect repellents and depression.

Despite the attempts of the rain at the end of the afternoon it was an enjoyable and informative day out coming to terms with the offerings of the British countryside.

Since the event seemed popular and sold out quickly, Wessex branch are considering running it again and anyone interested should contact wessex@societyofbiology.org.
