Leventhorpe Vineyard 2010

Autumn outing to Leventhorpe  vineyard

11 September 2010

On an autumnal morning George and Janet Bowden introduced a  small, enthusiastic group of members and friends to one of the most northerly vineyards in England. The 5 acre Leventhorpe Vineyard is part of the City of Leeds.

Visit to Leventhorpe Vineyard

George explained how carefully he chose this site in the early 1980s, looking for land which was less affected by snow, and thawed more rapidly than elsewhere. The land was suitable for vine cultivation with the roots able to go deep to get water. He reminded us that vineyards were established in Leeds area during Medieval times.

His main planting was with the “Barrington Brock” strain of Madeleine Angevine and Seyval, both vines known to produce well in English conditions. Other vines included some Triomphe black grapes. These were looking very well, disproving that our conditions are unsuitable for black grapes.  Two different arrangements of training were used. Unfortunately the walk in the vineyard was curtailed because of heavy rain, whereas only moments before the morning sun ensured the yard was remarkably warm.

Visit to Leventhorpe Vineyard

The visit concluded with some expert advice on tasting the various wines that are produced in their own winery. This explained why the wines had been popular with some of the TV wine experts and ensured Janet did good business selling the different white wines on offer, including a sparkling wine.
