Education

Working to support the advancement of biology education

The future of biology lies with those currently at school, college or university therefore ensuring biology education is 'fit for purpose' is a paramount aim of ours. We support our members working at all levels of education by producing education policy statements, responding to consultations and contributing to curriculum development. Through a partnership with other leading science organisations we aim to increase our influence over the direction of biology education in future years.

  • We are committed to supporting and encouraging the study of biology at all levels.
  • We support and recognise excellence in biology teaching.
  • We champion a biology curriculum that challenges students and encourages their passion for biology.
  • We support young scientists in their studies throughout higher education.
  • We provide careers guidance to students at all levels.

Education Policy

We believe that the key to maximising the impact of our efforts to support and enhance biological education from school to university lies in a greater degree of collaboration with students, teachers, and other science bodies concerned with education. To that end we are a core member of SCORE - Science Community Representing Education, which provides a coherent voice for the science community on the long-term issues in science education. Schools and Colleges

Early years and secondary education are an important contributing factor for students deciding to continue to study biology at GCSE, A Level and onto University. We support teachers working to enthuse the biologists of tomorrow through a number of leading resources. For more information click here.

University Bioscience Departments

The Society of Biology supports the reputation of individual bioscience degree courses through our Degree Recognition programme. Degree Recognition provides a guarantee to students that a degree programme can meet the educational requirements for Associate (AMSB) membership of the Society of Biology.

Careers Advice

Careers provision is central to our support for those in Education. We attend careers fairs and science festivals across the UK informing students of the vast opportunities open to those who study the biosciences. We can also put students in touch with our institutional members who offer travel bursaries and funding opportunities for sixth form, undergraduate and postgraduate students.
