SciCast: Short Films, Real Science
SciCast is an annual competition for short films about practical science and engineering. More than 400 films have been submitted from schools, youth groups, research labs, and families, all available as a free resource for teachers via the project website.
Now in its fourth year, this national competition encourages participants to think creatively about science, and to work within a team. It combines science learning with communication skills, and explores collaboration between different disciplines. Previous entries have used animation, marshmallows, Lego, rap, and Shetland ponies to explain a range of STEM subjects.
The ever-growing catalogue of films is both entertaining and inspiring, and forms a tremendously valuable education resource for the use and amusement of everyone involved, and particularly for schools. But it doesn't end there: SciCast also recognises and rewards the year's best films with coveted trophies and accolades.
It is free of charge to enter and the submission deadline for the SciCast Awards 2011 is April 27th.
The website provides full rules of the competition, tips on the film-making process, and lots of previous entrants and winners to inspire you!
