Subscription Fees

There is a one-off, non-refundable application fee payable when you apply to join the Society at Fellow, Member or Associate (AMSB) grade.

You must enclose the annual subscription fee in addition to the application fee. If your application is successful your membership will run from the month following election; otherwise the subscription will be refunded.

Membership fees are set annually and any fee increases come into effect on 1st October each year.

Students
If you are in full time education studying for a biology based qualification you are eligible to pay a reduced annual fee of £15 for affiliate or associate membership.

Retired or unemployed
If you are retired or unwaged, we offer a reduced fee - please contact the membership department for further information.

Life Membership

Life members are able to take advantage of the benefits of being a member without the requirement to pay future annual subscriptions. As a life member, you will be making a life long contribution to the advancement of the biological sciences for the benefit of all. Please contact us if you would like to become a life member.

If you have been a member for 10 or more years you are able to take advantage of a 10% discount on the above fees. If you have been a member for 20 or more years you are eligible for a 20% discount on the above fees.

Current members wishing to transfer to a higher grade

A £15 non-refundable transfer fee must be paid for applications to transfer to the Member or Fellow grades. There is no fee when transferring to the Associate (AMSB) grade. Transfers cannot take place unless your current subscription is fully paid. The new rate will not become due until the anniversary of your original election.

Special Rates

We have partnered with the Biochemical Society, the Society for Endocrinology, the Royal Society for Public Health and the Royal College of Pathologists to offer their individual members a special rate on Society of Biology membership. For their members applying to join, we offer a discount of 50% for the first year’s membership subscription.
