Event description
Leventhorpe Vineyard, part of the City of Leeds, is England’s most northerly commercial vineyard. The vineyard revives the tradition of wine making in Yorkshire established by the Cistercian monks of Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds and the Benedictines of York.
George Bowden and his wife Janet re-introduced commercial winegrowing to Yorkshire by establishing the 5 acre vineyard in 1985. It employs traditional methods together with modern equipment and techniques to produce a range of wines – white, red and sparking (made in the traditional method). The main wines are Seyval and Madeleine Angevine, both early ripening white varieties, and Triomphe, a red grape. Other white varieties are available in smaller quantities. wines are given a long fermentation to preserve nose and delicacy.
The wines are awarded Yorkshire Regional Wines status. The vineyard is recommended in Rick Stein’s Guide and Leventhorpe Madeleine Angevine was included as one of the Wines of the Week in The Daily Telegraph in July 2006. It was also recommended by Jancis Robinson in the Financial Times in May 2007. Oz Clarke has recommended Leventhorpe’s wines over the years and the vineyard was included in his new series ‘Oz and James Drink to Britain’. Oz Clarke’s also included it in his ‘Pick of the Best’ six British vineyards for the May 2009 issue of BBC Countryfile magazine.
The visit will be guided by the owners, will be a vineyard tour, a winery talk and free tasting.
No arrangements are being made for lunch, however there are two recommended pubs nearby that do food.
