Society of Biology welcomes Prime Minister’s commitment to UK Life Sciences Industry

In an important speech today David Cameron set out a renewed government strategy for support of the life sciences and pharmaceutical sector in the UK.

He went on to describe a series of patent, licensing and tax measures aimed to encourage investment and speed the path to clinical use of promising medicine in the NHS. The most fundamental changes proposed involve increased involvement of the health service in research and the opening up of NHS data to research and development, including by the life sciences industries, protection for the individual’s right to opt-out has been highlighted. Further consultation is planned.

Dr Mark Downs, Chief Executive of the Society of Biology said

“Better integrating the wealth of knowledge and information available within the NHS is absolutely essential if we are to continue to lead the world in pharmaceutical research. We welcome the Prime Minister’s clear commitment to the life sciences through additional funding and the better regulation agenda.”
