New Honorary Fellows announced
The Society of Biology has elected two eminent scientists from Japan as Honorary Fellows - Professor Isao Karube, President of the Tokyo University of Technology and Professor Mitsuhiro Yanagida, Principal investigator of CREST JST at Kyoto University. Both will be awarded with this prestigious honour by the British Ambassador to Japan, at an official ceremony in September, attended by our Chief Executive, Dr Mark Downs, FSB.
Mark said, “Japan is a leading scientific nation with strong links to the UK. We are delighted to celebrate Japan’s success in biology through these two high profile awards.”
Meanwhile, two of our Honorary Fellows have this week been made Honorary Fellows of the Royal Entomological Society (RES) recognising their contribution to entomological science - Professor David Bellamy and British peer and businessman the Earl of Selborne, John Roundell Palmer. The announcement was made at the launch of National Insect Week, the RES’s bi-ennial celebration of the diversity of the insect world. Professor Bellamy and the Earl of Selborne were present to accept their Fellowships.
Professor Bellamy said: “There is a silent disaster taking place but it is not all doom and gloom. We can reverse the decline of the butterfly species and other nectar feeding insects very easily. I am honoured to be awarded this fellowship as I fully endorse everything the RES is doing to educate and support our communities to achieve a thriving insect population once again.”
