Society of Biology celebrates the biology of sport at ASE 2012
The Society of Biology, along with some of our Member Organisations, started the new year with our annual trip to the Association for Science Education (ASE) Conference, this year hosted by the University of Liverpool. We exhibited across the three days on a joint Biology Stand alongside Biochemical Society, Association for Animal Behaviour (ASAB), Linnean Society, British Ecological Society, The Physiological Society, Kew Gardens, Understanding Animal Research (UAR), and Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS). As delegates entered the marquee they were greeted with practical activities run by SAPS, The Linnean Society, UAR and the ASAB. Further in delegates were able to browse the multitude of free resources available to support biology in the classroom; and the complimentary radish seeds, virus message bugs promoting www.practicalbiology.org and Happy Families Immunology game proved extremely popular with teachers and technicians alike. The membership team also attend the conference to launch our new category of membership for school and college students, BioNet.
Also for the 9th year running we, as a member of the Nucleus group, organised a series of talks on the Friday as part of our popular Biology in the Real World series. As 2012 sees the Olympics come to London it seemed appropriate that the theme was entitled ‘A Sporting Chance,’ with talks ranging from topics such as drugs in sport to exercise and immunity and pressure in plant biology.
Don't worry if you missed out on the talks, you can now find the presentations on our website, under the education pages and if you’re on Twitter search #BitRW for highlights from the day’s talks.
