Society of Biology Scotland Branch BioSciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2011
We are now taking entries for our exciting annual poster competition for undergraduate students. The poster should present the entrants undergraduate project. The winner will be awarded a Society of Biology Scotland framed certificate, £150 (supported by the Wellcome Trust) and a year’s student/graduate membership to the Society of Biology at the Science and Parliament event in Edinburgh in November 2011. The winning poster will be printed and displayed at the event and published in our peer reviewed journal The Biologist.

For the full details please read on:-
1) Each University may submit up to 3 Biological Sciences undergraduate student applications. These are to be in the form of a poster presenting an undergraduate project. Submissions will be accepted from all years of student and it is up to individual Universities to select the 3 best / most suitable entries.
2) Submissions are welcomed covering the complete range of specialist areas which come under the banner of Biological Sciences.
3)The winner will be presented with a Society of Biology Scotland framed certificate, £150 (supported by the Wellcome Trust) and a year’s student/graduate membership to the Society of Biology at the Science and the Parliament event in Edinburgh in November 2011. The winning poster will also be printed and displayed at the event.
4) Applications must be emailed by The Society of Biology University Representative to jennyelaineyoung@gmail.com by 30 June 2011.
5) The submission must be in the form of a pdf file. The area of the file should be set to standard A0 size.
6) Posters will be marked by the Society of Biology Scotland Branch Council members on the aspects outlined below:
a) Eye-catching - does the use of colour, spacing, fonts, figures and tables, and overall layout invite closer investigation of the material?
[20% of overall mark]
b) Are all the usual components of an academic publication present - introduction/protocol/materials and methods/results/discussion/references - and in sufficient detail for the work to be comprehended (by a scientifically literate reader)?
[30% of overall mark]
c) The quality of science - how interesting is/are the question/s asked, how well has the reported work provided answers, and does the report suggest further investigation?
[30% of overall mark]
d) Engagement of the Public – has the poster been presented in a way that would allow an educated layperson to understand the work carried out by the student and the conclusions drawn?
[20% of overall mark]
