We offer a range of membership grades to match your professional experience, including Chartered Biologist (CBiol), which recognises your high professional expertise. Our continuing professional development (CPD) scheme is designed for you to develop your professional skills and knowledge enabling you to achieve Chartered status. The services we provide are designed to support you throughout your career. We also provide members with a selection of third party benefits including discounts from a range of leading academic publishers.

Stay ahead of the field

Our post-nominal letters signify to all that you are a professional biologist, well qualified and subject to a rigorous code of conduct. Holders of these letters are committed to the advancement of the biological sciences and maintain high standards of competence and ethical behaviour.

Stay up to date with what’s happening at the forefront of biology through our fully peer-reviewed and  citation-listed journal Biologist. Our monthly e-newsletter will keep you informed of the work the Society is
doing on your behalf, such as news from our science policy team and details of new member services.

Membership gives you access to a wide and diverse network of biologists. You can contact other members  according to their specialism by searching our online directory in the members’ area of the website. You can also take part in online discussions and feed into our responses to government consultations.

The vibrant network of local branches organises a rolling calendar of exciting events, and we will also keep you
informed of important national events and symposia.

Gain new skills and qualifications 

Our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme has been designed to recognise the work you do
to keep your skills up to date. Successfully following the CPD programme can lead to the award of Chartered  Biologist (CBiol) status.

Chartered status is recognised as a hallmark of excellence both in the UK and the European Union and entitles you to apply for the title of European Professional Biologist (EurProBiol).

We are frequently consulted on biological issues by government departments, funding bodies, industry and other national and international organisations. Drawing on the breadth of our membership, we are able to produce a balanced response, reflecting the views of the biological profession as a whole. As a member, you will be kept up to date on our ongoing consultations and your input will always be very welcome. We also produce policy statements and briefing notes on topics. We are frequently consulted on biological issues by government departments, funding bodies, industry and other national and international organisations.
